Community-Based Public Health Caucus to host CBPR Learning Institute at the American Public Health Association Annual Meeting
The Community-Based Public Health Caucus (CBPH Caucus) has received funding from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities of the National Institutes of Health to support “Enhancing Expertise of Community Partners to Promote Equity in Community-Based Participatory Research”, a full day Learning Institute offered on November 2, 2013 by the CBPH Caucus at the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Annual Meeting.
The purpose of this APHA-LI course is to develop the knowledge and skills, as well as the peer relationships and support systems needed by community partners to reduce health disparities in their communities by participating as equal partners in Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR). This institute will be led by teams of community and academic experts.
The American Public Health Association Learning Institute (APHA-LI) courses held immediately prior to the APHA Annual Meeting for the past seven years consist of a limited number of concentrated skills-based continuing education (CE) opportunities. These workshops play a valuable role in responding to the educational needs of the public health workforce by offering learners the chance to participate in a more intense and interactive educational experience.
The CBPH Caucus chose one of its founding organizations as the organizing and fiscal lead of this effort: Community-Based Organization Partners (CBOP) of Flint, Michigan. CBOP, a non-profit 501C-3 organization established in 1998 to build a unified community voice among community partners in research, is an alliance of grassroots organizations. It provides a model of a structure and forum through which CBOs can exchange ideas, offer services, and partner in research to address health disparities in local communities. The Caucus received $43,889 to primarily cover travel and APHA registration costs for community members.
