Iran is one of the first developing countries to use a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to address public health outcomes. In 2001 Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education established several “Population Research Centers” to solve health-related problems through capacity building and empowerment of local communities using a CBPR approach. In this presentation, Professor Malekafzali describes characteristics, processes of implementation and challenges associated with this experience, and implications for applying CBPR in other countries.
Dr. Hossein Malekafzali is an Iranian scientist and physician, and the former Deputy Health Minister of Iran and an Associate of the World Health Organization. In 2007 the United Nations awarded him with the prestigious UN Population Award. He has been at the forefront of CBPR efforts in Iran, and has helped to design strategies to improve health procedures, reproductive health and family planning.
