Dr. Canady was an Assistant Professor in the Michigan State University College of Nursing and developed a research trajectory in health disparities, emphasizing the social context of mental and physical illness in women. She continues to teach for MSU as an adjunct faculty. She has published and presented broadly on these topics. Dr. Canady earned her PhD in Medical Sociology from Michigan State University, a master's degree in Health Administration from Western Michigan University and a bachelor's degree in Public Health Nutrition from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Dr. Canady has been an outstanding researcher, advocate, educator, trainer and facilitator in the areas of health disparities and inequities, cultural competence, and social justice throughout her career and personal life. Dr. Canady's research interests include health disparities, cultural competency, and the social context of mental and physical illness in women. Dr. Canady's previous research work investigates social predictors of maternal mental health and pregnancy outcomes, focusing on African American women.
