Job Title: Community Organizer

Reports to: Community Engagement Project Manager

Job Terms:Full time with benefits. Work schedule will include a set of core hours, but will require accommodation for some evenings and weekends based on job requirements.

Job Scope:Fostering meaningful relationships with residents, neighborhood organizations, and other community stakeholders through several community engagement initiatives on Detroit’s Lower Eastside with a goal of building resident and local business leadership capacity and desire to lead transformation efforts. Projects include: the Eastside Farmers Market, the Eastside Walking Club, Walking Against Blight, the Lower Eastside Action Plan, the Eastside Community Outreach Corps, the Mack Avenue Business Association, the Conner Avenue Coalition To Upgrade our Street, and other community engagement initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or equivalent experience
  • At least one year of verifiable community organizing experience (paid or volunteer)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal relationship-building skills (verbal and non-verbal)
  • Proven ability to engage and interact with diverse people, and a willingness to engage with them to achieve the goals of each project
  • Proven ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Experience and familiarity with computer software, including Microsoft Office Suite, especially database applications (Excel, Access; GIS proficiency preferred but not required)

  • Resident of Detroit
  • Familiarity with Detroit’s Eastside

Key Responsibilities:

  • Report to the Community Engagement Project Manager
  • Develop meaningful and authentic relationships with residents, block clubs, businesses, and other community stakeholders to understand their priorities, concerns, vision for their community, etc.
  • Foster collaboration between WCDC and community stakeholders.
  • Encourage resident leadership in all community engagement initiatives.
  • Coordinate the Eastside Walking Club including planning, resident participant recruitment & retention, small group facilitation, and evaluation.
  • Implement Walking Against Blight, a community blight mapping and advocacy project, including recruitment of residents, mapping walking routes, training on use of technology to record blight hot spots, training in policy advocacy, and coordination of advocacy efforts to remove blight.
  • Assist the Market Master at Eastside Farmers Market at the weekly market (Saturdays, 8am – 3pm) including set up & tear down, implementation of market programming, and running the information booth with a primary focus on building relationships with residents who shop at the market.
  • Facilitate community engagement and resident recruitment for the Lower Eastside Action Plan.
  • Coordinate Eastside Community Outreach Corps and various door-to-door outreach and engagement initiatives.
  • Assist the Community Engagement Project Manager in coordinating the Mack Avenue Business Association and the Conner Avenue Coalition to Upgrade Our Street through door-to-door outreach, e-newsletters, business database maintenance, etc.
  • Provide regular updates as requested including grant reporting, regular analysis of project progress, and necessary changes to improve project efforts.
  • Fundraising efforts as required by WCDC
