If you answered yes, then be sure to sign up for a complimentary training workshop called Collaborative Research Capacity Building for CBOs on February 10, 2016 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the University of Michigan Detroit Center (South Studio Room) at 3663 Woodward Ave. 

Sponsored by the Detroit Urban Research Center, this half-day training session introduces principles and methods of a collaborative research approach that empowers Detroit CBO leaders to put their community's interest first. This is an exceptional opportunity to learn from community and academic experts in Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR), at no cost to you or your organization. To gain the most value out of the workshop, we encourage you to bring multiple colleagues from your organization.

The Detroit Community-Academic Urban Research Center (Detroit URC) is providing up to five scholarships to a week-long summer short course, Methods in Community-Based Participatory Research for Health (Epid 783), from July 13 - 17, 2015.This summer course, which is is being offered through the University of Michigan School of Public Health in Ann Arbor, will be taught over the course of five half-days by a team of ten trainers (five university researchers and five Detroit-based partners). Click here for details about the course. 

To be eligible, individuals must be affiliated with a Detroit community-based organization or health and human services agency and be interested in building their organization's capacity to engage in collaborative health research. A total of five community-based organization members will be selected for the scholarship, which will cover the $575 tuition fee (for non-credit seeking students).

Congratulations to the Winter 2015 winners of the Detroit URC's Small Planning Grant Program, which supports the establishment of new community-academic partnerships and new collaborative health research efforts in Detroit. Recipients of this grant competition (our fifth consecutive round) are as follows: 

• TITLE: Forming a collaborative health research partnership to increase effectiveness and reach of chronic disease prevention and management services among Detroit elderly
• PARTNERS: Susan Zanley, Director, Nutrition, Health and Wellness Unit; Detroit Area Agency on Aging; Mary Janevic, Assistant Research Scientist, University of Michigan School of Public Health
• GOAL: Build a strong collaborative research partnership among DAAA, CMCD and other representatives of the community of older adults in Detroit; explore research interests shared among partners; and identify and address capacity building needs.

• TITLE: Community-Based Recovery and Reentry Research in Detroit
• PARTNERS: Dwight Vaughter, Chief Executive Officer, Self Help Addiction Rehabilitation, Inc. Juliette Rody, Chair of the Department of Health and Human Services, University of Michigan - Dearborn Urban and Regional Studies
• GOAL: Engage in partnership formation efforts to enhance an active community-university partnership with Self Help Addiction Rehabilitation, Inc., Detroit Recovery Project, Michael Johnson, and Positive Images as well as other substance abuse treatment centers and dedicated re-entry programs.
