County Health Rankings have been used in Wayne County, MI, which includes the city of Detroit. The county has more than 1.8 million people, making it 15th largest in the country.

Under the direction of the Detroit URC Center Manager and working closely with Detroit URC faculty, staff and Detroit-based partners, the Intern(s) will assist the URC team with activities related to several Detroit URC programs and activities (NIH “Infrastructure Project”, Skillman Foundation “Neighborhoods Working in Partnership” and RWJ/Skillman/Kellogg Foundations “Neighborhoods Taking Action”) including:

Detroit’s Latino community received a $1 million donation from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation Dec. 1, 2011 as part of an initiative to create a stronger structure and stability in the Southwest Detroit area. Among the six Latino-led organizations that came together to apply for the grant and build the Latino agenda, three serve on the board of the Detroit URC. They are Community Health and Social Services Center, Detroit Hispanice Development Corporation and Latino Family Services.

This was the first time that the Consortium of Hispanic Agencies in Southwest Detroit directly received a largeamount of funding from a non-profit organization, according to Norman Bent, executive director of the CHA.

When asked what issues the Latino community faces, Bent narrowed them down to seven: “education, immigration, city and political engagement, youth violence, health and environmental justice, economic development and sexual orientation and identity.”

Although each issue is important and also resides with other minority communities, Bent said, a lack of education is the major culprit.

LANSING - The Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH), Division of Health, Wellness and Disease Control, Health Disparities Reduction and Minority Health Section (HDRMHS) is issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) in recognition of National Minority Health Month.

The theme for this year’s events is “Exploring Solutions to Violence, Obesity, and HIV/AID/STDs Among Minority Youth.” Activities will focus on creating youth and community-driven media projects to highlight community level solutions to violence, obesity and HIV/AIDS/STDs among minority youth.
