The Active Living Detroit Mini-Grant Program awards mini-grants of up to $1000 to Detroiters developing sustainable projects and activities that 1) engage community residents, 2) build local ownership of Detroit neighborhoods and 3) create social and physical environments that promote active living and physical health.

Any neighborhood groups or organization located in the city of Detroit can apply. This includes, but is not limited to, block clubs, art groups, service organizations, parks and recreational organizations, churches, professional associations, public and non-public school-based groups, and individuals. Application deadline is February 1, 2012.

Detroit URC Network members will use a $2.8 million National Institutes of Health grant to connect underrepresented communities with health scientists to improve health research priorities. Led by Susan Dorr Gold, MD, MHSA, MA Professor of Internal Medicine and Health Management and Policy in the University of Michigan Medical School and School of Public Health and Zachary Rowe, Director of Friends of Parkside and founding member of the Detroit URC, the study will allow minority and underserved communities to be involved in the health research decision-making process through simulation exercises and deliberations.

Community conversations are being held to provide input to the new statewide Education Achievement Authority (EAA) that will impact the future of Detroit Schools and they want your input! The EAA is a statewide district that will have authority over under-performing schools in Michigan. Participants will discuss what should be included in school redesign, and how EAA schools will differ from traditional schools.
